"Maggie And Jacob" is a story poem. This poem is loosely
based on a story I heard from one of my college roommates, many years ago.
“MAGGIE AND JACOB” I wanna tell ya a story of
two good folk Whose luck wasn’t all that great. They lived in a time, not long ago, In a land with too much
hate. He was a care-free white guy, He was tall and kinda lean. She was a beautiful, ebony woman, Coulda passed
for an African queen.
Maggie and Jacob were two lost souls, Not as different as they might seem. Jacob
was tryin’ to find his way, Maggie was lookin’ for her dream. Well, Jacob was a powerful man; He didn’t
have many fears. Maggie was a different sort, Her strength was through her tears.
I don’t know why they fell in love; When they felt that fiery
spark. But what the townsfolk cared about: He was light and she was dark. I could never figure why it
mattered, ‘Cause it all seemed out of place. They were just two kids so much in love, But they were of a different
race.
Yeah, Jacob was white, and Maggie, black, So why did it even matter!?! But four bullies
beat the first, And then they shot the latter. Oh, Maggie died in Jacob’s arms, And how that poor boy cried! Without
his Maggie in his life, He committed suicide.
This all happened long ago, When I was just a kid. But even
then, I made a vow, They would pay for what they did. And now I wait for my certain fate, Here in this jail
cell. 'Cause I found those monsters, one and all, And sent them straight to hell.

“DREAM LOVER” When I look deep into your eyes Oh,
girl, what do I see? The one that I’ve been dreamin’ of, Lookin’ right back at me. Please don’t
turn away, now, ‘Cause all I wanna do, Is take you right here in my arms, And whisper, “I love you”.
Bridge: You’re my dream lover, But sometimes dreams come true. And
some day when I least expect, You’ll say you love me, too. But right now, it’s just a dream, And I can
only fantasize. Your love is real when I go to sleep; I can’t wait to close my eyes.
Well, I’m just a dreamin’ man, It’s all I could ever do. But
any dream I’ve ever had Has always been of you. You may care for another, But in my dreams you’re mine. And
I know if I go on dreamin’, I can feel your love light shine.

"Better Than What I Am" was written almost 30 years ago
- for, and about, a woman who had a more profound and positive effect upon my life than anyone I have ever known.
Her love, faith and belief in me truly made me a better person than I ever thought I could be.
"Better Than What I Am"
You come from a different world than me, But you were one who understood. I
kept hoping you might like me, But I never thought you would. What is it that you see in me? I'm just an ordinary
man. Babe, you're the one who makes me Better than what I am.
CHORUS: Better than what I am, Better than what I am, You're the one
who makes me Better than what I am. When I think I cannot do things You convince me that I can. 'Cause you're
the one who makes me Better than what I am.
Are you the woman I hope you are, Are you really what you seem? Do you
really have such faith in me, Or are you just a dream? When I feel down and insecure, I know you understand. 'Cause
you're the one who makes me Better than what I am.
Repeat Chorus:

"Someone From My Past" was written in December, 2002,
for a beautiful, classy, young woman that reminds me so much of someone from my past. The physical resemblance, dignity,
grace and class they both share, is uncanny. You may have guessed it - yes, the resemblance is to my
Ebony Lady. (See link, "Compositions #1)
“SOMEONE FROM MY PAST”
The moment I first met you Is as vivid as today. You looked so much like
someone else, It just took my breath away. I wish that I had known then What surely I know now. If I could just
go back in time, And do it different, somehow.
You have such a quiet dignity, You have so much grace and class. I wish
you didn’t remind me Of someone from my past. I was such a young man then, I thought I knew it all, But
I never saw it comin’, I never thought I’d fall.
The years have passed too quickly,
And my life is fading fast. But I could never break the chains To
someone from my past. Well, you are so much younger, babe, You have so much style and grace. You bring back all the
memories Of a better time and place.
I’m really not all that concerned ‘Bout things that cannot last. No
one could ever touch my heart Like someone from my past. But it won’t be very long, now, When I surely have
to part. And ‘though I’ll never see you again, You’ll stay here in my heart.

“CHOICES”
I’m not one to blindly follow Where lesser men may lead. I don’t
want the crowd’s approval ‘Cause I never felt the need. At times I’ve been a scoundrel, I’ve
been a bit of a rake, There are even times I might regret Some choices that I make.
I never really understood Why others just follow along. But, then, I guess
it’s easier Than choosing right from wrong. I prefer to go my own way, But no matter which road I take, My
path is always guided By choices that I make.
The world is such a great big place And it's full of saints and sinners. But
I’m not afraid of facing death, ‘Cause my life has been a winner. I don’t have too many fears; What
life gives me, I can take. ‘Cause all that really matters Are choices that I make.
There are some who may not like me, There are those who think I’m weird, But
I’ve never been reluctant, To face the things I feared. I’m not afraid to pay the price For I know there’s
much at stake. But I choose to go my own way, By the choices that I make.

Not too many people impress me, primarily because
they are beaten down by a world that encourages - or insists upon - conformity. "What Is It About You?" is
dedicated to a person with whom I am very impressed because she marches to the beat of a different drum. This poem is
for all those free spirits who dare to be different.
"What Is It About You?"
I remember when I met you,
I wasn't too impressed.
I never thought I'd change my mind, 'Cause I never would have guessed.
You're such a special person,
And I'm delighted that we met.
But just what is it about you,
That makes you one I'll not forget?
Oh, girl, what is it about you
That makes me want to be your friend?
Since you're not like all the others,
It's not something I comprehend.
Why should I even be concerned
That you're different from the rest?
You march to a different drummer,
And it's a trait I like the best.
Will I become a better person,
Will I change my wanton ways?
Will I look back with some regret,
And long for the good old days?
Will I become the kind of man
I always felt that I could be?
It's all because of you, my friend,
And the effect you've had on me.
Well, I always try to be honest,
If I can't always be kind.
Please don't get upset with me,
When I say what's on my mind.
I know I've told you many times
But let me tell you once again.
You have nothing at all to fear from me,
'Cause I just want to be your friend.
I worked for a few months with an incredibly nice, considerate
group of people who went out of their way to make me feel welcome in their work environment. This is dedicated to all
of them.
"A Heartfelt Thanks"
There are people who leave nice memories, They are ones I'm glad I met. There
are others I won't remember, But you're the folks I won't forget.
I'll say 'take care', but not 'good-bye', 'Cause
it's time for me to part. You'll never be too far away, You have a home here in my heart.
