"If I Could Take Away Your Pain" was written for
a friend of mine, but it is dedicated to any soul suffering from the pain and sorrow of losing a loved one.
"If I Could Take Away Your Pain"
If I could take away your pain, I would do it in a minute. I would
find a great, big box And pack your sorrows in it. I would get a great, big shovel And dig a hole deep in the ground. I
would toss your sorrows in, So they would never be found.
If I could take away your pain, If you would give
it all to me, I would lock it up somewhere, And throw away the key. If you could pack your sorrows, And leave
them at my door, I would take them far away. You wouldn’t see them any more.
If I could take away your pain, If I could wipe away a tear, You
would never doubt The words I am writing here. I want you to be happy, ‘Cause you know I am your friend. I’d
do almost anything To see you smile again.

"If You Believe" was one of the first songs I wrote, and
subsequently recorded, for the woman who had the most profound impact on my attitude toward love and life, My Ebony Lady.
Even now, more than 20 years after we parted, she is always in my heart, and often on my mind. To paraphase a song written
by Phil Spector, "to know her was to love her", and I loved her dearly.
“If You Believe”
I know you don’t believe in Things I say and do. So here’s
a simple little song I’ve written just for you. You are my inspiration, You are my rock and roll, You are
my country sunshine, Girl, you are my soul.
Refrain: And if.... you believe in music, Then you’ll
believe in me. If you believe in the words of love, Then, girl, I know you’ll see, That I believe in the tunes
I write, And ‘though my songs are few, Words of love and tenderness, I write ‘em all for you.
Woman, you are the music That makes my life worthwhile, The words
they come so easily, Whenever I see your smile. And ‘though I may not show it, I think the world of you. You’ve
shown me I can do things I thought I could not do..
Repeat refrain

"I'll Be Faithful" was written, and dedicated, to a special
friend of mine. Unfortunately, my plea seems to be in vain. Alas, some things just aren't meant to be and this
seems to be one of them. Pity.
“I’ll Be Faithful” by Deryl R. Mitchell
You think you have reason to doubt me, But one thing I’ll make quite
clear, Don’t look at me as you do other men, ‘Cause no other man is my peer. Don’t just take me
at my word, babe, Don’t just watch what I say and do, Let me make you this commitment, That I’ll be faithful
to you.
I know you’ve had much sorrow, I know you’ve had too much
pain, But let the sunshine of my love, Be your umbrella from all the rain. You’ve been crying for a long time, But,
girl, there’s one thing I can do, I can make you a sincere promise That I’ll be faithful to you.
I wish you would let me hold you And let me take you by the arm, Let me
guide you through life’s turmoil, And protect you from all harm. In a world of pain and sorrow, Where promises
don’t ring true, There’s one thing you can depend upon, I’ll be faithful to you.

"A Couple of Years Ago" was inspired by - and
dedicated to - a very close, dear friend of mine. For the most part, it was written from my personal experience.
I wish I had met my dear friend - my little buddy - a couple of years ago. Things might have worked out differently,
but who knows? Perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part. Sometimes even the Mighty MitchMan engages in wishful
thinking, but I can't help but wonder, "what might have been?".
"A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO"
I wish that I had met you
A couple of years ago.
Would things have been different?
I guess we’ll never know.
I‘ve had my share of sorrow,
And now I curse my fate.
For I have found the one I love,
But I found you much too late.
I loved you the moment I saw you,
And when you smiled at me,
You had the aura of an angel,
As close to perfect as I’ll see.
I’m not sorry I loved you,
And I’m not sorry we met.
But the pain of this broken heart,
Is one thing I’ll never forget.
I gave up looking for love
So many years ago.
Now this crazy corporate life
Is the only life I know.
We had a special friendship,
And we knew someday we’d part.
But no matter where you travel
You’ll have a home here in my heart.
I dread it when I wake up
From another dream of you,
I want to take you in my arms,
But dreamin’ will have to do.
I’m sure you whispered you love me,
As your lips pressed against my skin.
But you’re returning to your husband,
And I’ll never see you again.

"I Know You Know" is the most painful song
I've ever written. It was written for, and dedicated to, a dear, close friend. Her father, whom I admired
and respected, was murdered in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 22, 2004. I was with her the night she received that
dreadful call regarding his untimely death.
"I Know You Know"
My tears they fell like raindrops, When I heard of your father's death. A
kind and decent man has died, And it takes away my breath. I loved him for the man he was, And for the man he saw
in me, He tried to make a better world, He’s the man I want to be.
I know you know I'm here for you, And I hate to see you cry. But
when you lose someone you love, It’s best you don’t ask "why?". One door closes, but another opens, That’s
the way it’s always been. It’s raining in your heart right now, But the sun will shine again.
Bridge: I know you know when you call on me, I’ll be
there to hold you tight. I’ll be there to wipe away your tears, And to calm you through the night. We’ve
been there for each other, There's so much we've had to share. Call on me when you need me, And you know that I’ll
be there.
We've been friends for quite awhile, We have a bond that won't be
broken. We never need to say too much, 'Cause our feelings go unspoken. I don’t quite know how to say it, So
I’ll do it with a touch. You cannot doubt I care for you, And I know you know how much.
Repeat bridge:

"One Friend" was written for a particular friend
of mine, but it is dedicated to all of my friends, who truly are special people.
“One Friend”
by D. R. Mitchell
You are so much different, From others that I know. At first I had so many
doubts A friendship would ever grow. You seem to walk your own path, You travel your own road. You’ve had
a lot of sorrow, You carry a heavy load.
You always bring me sunshine, You drive away the rain. In my wild and crazy
world, Your friendship keeps me sane. You’ve taken the time to help me, Cheered me up when I was blue. If
I had but one friend left, I’d want it to be you.
When all of this is over, And the tears have just begun. I ask that you
not cry for me, But remember all I’ve done. With everything I’ve written, Remember this is true: If
I had but one friend left, I’d want it to be you.
