Langston

Hughes

Langston Hughes is one of my favorite poets.
I hope readers enjoy this one.

"Lost Poem of Langston Hughes"

My old man's a white old man
And my old mother's black.
If ever I cursed my white old man
I take my curses back.

If ever I cursed my black old mother
And wished she were in hell,
I'm sorry for that evil wish
And now I wish her well.

My old man died in a fine big house.
My ma died in a shack.
I wonder where I'm going to die,
Being neither white nor black?

      “IF I KNEW”
 - Author Unknown

If I knew this was the last time
I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
And ask the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew this was the last time
I’d see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
And call you back for more.

If I knew this was the last time
I'd hear your voice rise up in praise,
I would video tape each word and action,
So I could play them back each day.
If I knew this was the last time,
I would spare an extra minute
To stop and say "I love you,"
Instead of assuming you KNOW I do.

If I knew this was the last time
I would be there to share your day,
but  I'm sure you'll have so many more,
I can let this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
To make up for an oversight,
And we always get a second chance
To make everything just right.

There will always be another day
To say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
To say "Anything I can do?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
And today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
And I hope you never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
Young or old alike,
And today may be my last chance
To get to hold you tight.
So hold your loved ones close today,
And whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
And that you'll always hold them dear

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
Why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
You'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
For a smile, a hug, or a kiss
And you were too busy to grant someone,
What turned out to be their last wish.

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
You'll have no regrets about today.

"A Cautious Man" will never be mistaken for a classic, but it's a fun little ditty and I enjoy it.  I hope visitors will enjoy it, also.  It was brought to my attention by my friend, Jarre, whom - unfortunately - I haven't seen for many years.

"A Cautious Man"
  Author Unknown

He was a very cautious man,
He never romped or played.
He never smoked, he never drank,
Nor even kissed a maid.
And when he up and passed away,
Insurance was denied.
For since he never really lived,
They claim he never died.

   "Treasure True"
Submitted by G. Gerard

To start anew and spread your wings,
to fly so high and see new things
that from afar appear so rare
and promise treasure, true and rare

But when fatigue is in your wings
and you descend to see those things,
the saddest truth, perhaps to find
is treasure true . . . was left behind.

"Nobody Knows It But Me"
        Author Unknown

There is a place that I travel
When I want to roam.
And nobody knows it but me.
The roads don’t go there
And the signs stay home.
And nobody knows it but me.

It's far far away
And way way afar,
It’s over the moon and the sea.
And wherever you’re going
That’s where you are.
And nobody knows it but me.

        "A Farewell"
by Alfred Lord Tennyson

Flow down, cold rivulet, to the sea,
Thy tribute wave deliver:
No more by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever.

Flow, softly flow, by lawn and lea,
A rivulet then a river;
No where by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever.

But here will sigh thine alder tree,
And here thine aspen shiver;
And here by thee will hum the bee,
For ever and for ever.

A thousand suns will stream on the,
A thousand moons will quiver;
But not by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever.

This is another little poem that will never be mistaken for a classic -  but it's fun, and I hope visitors will enjoy it in the spirit for which it was intended - just a little ditty to make one smile.

"Arkansas Love Story"
     Author Unknown

Suzy Lee fell in love.
She planned to marry Joe.
She was so happy about it all,
She told her pappy so.

Pappy told her, "Suzie Gal",
You'll have to find another.
I'd just as soon your maw don't know,
But Joe is your half-brother.

So Suzie forgot about her Joe
And planned to marry Will.
But after telling pappy this,
He said "There's trouble still."

You can't marry Will, my gal,
And please don't tell your mother,
‘Cause Will and Joe, and several more
I know, is your half-brother."

But mama knew and said,
"Honey chile, do what makes you happy.
Marry Will or marry Joe,
You ain't no kin to pappy!"
